[미국대학 입시] COVID-19와 여름방학 특별활동

CollegeBoard에서 ‘Extracurricular Activities (특별활동)’ 키워드를 검색하면 약 1790여개의 자료가 검색된다. 이는 ‘SAT’로 검색되는 8250여개의 결과와 비교했을 때 약 1/4에 달하는 수치이며 그 의미가 크다. SAT를 주관하는 칼리지보드가 아이비리그를 비롯한 미국명문대학 입시에 특별활동의 중요성을 리서치, 칼럼, 프레젠테이션, 입학사정관 인터뷰 등 다양한 컨텐츠를 이용해 주장하고 SAT와 특별활동을 4:1의 비율로 기사화 했다는 사실은 놀라운 일이다. 하지만 이러한 현실에도 불구하고, 유학생 자녀를 둔 한국 학부모들은 여전히 SAT에만 집중하며 클럽, 봉사, 인턴십 등의 활동이 대학입시의 핵심요소라는 사실을 잊은 채 대입을 준비하고 있다. 대학에서는 코로나19의 상황에서 SAT, ACT, Subject 등 공인인증시험을 입시의 필수가 아닌 선택항목으로 변경하는 Test-Optional 정책을 내놓고, 또한 전 세계가 대 유행병과 사투를 벌이는 이 역사적인 순간에 지원생이 지역사회에 어떠한 긍정적 영향을 미치고 헌신하였는지 특별활동을 통해 검토하고 집중하고 있음을 기억해야 한다.
여름방학 기간은 자신의 관심분야를 다양한 활동을 통해 탐구하고 확장 및 심화시키기 위해 특화된 시간이다. 전통적으로 미국 명문 대학뿐 아니라 아시아의 일류대학 입학을 목표로 하는 수많은 야심 찬 학생들에게 여름방학은 캠프, 인턴십, 자원봉사 등 각종 프로그램에 참여할 수 있는 기회의 장이 되어 왔다. 하지만 코로나19로 인해 대부분의 여름 활동이 취소되고, 학교 및 각종 단체 행사, 대회, 인턴십 등의 중단이 불가피하게 되면서 많은 이들이 혼란에 빠지게 되었다.
온라인 상에 생겨난 수많은 기회
COVID-19로 인해 오프라인 기회가 사라진 반면, 온라인상에서는 또 다른 수많은 기회가 생겨났다. 더욱 다양해진 대학 온라인 Summer Program과 eCornell, Coursera, EdX (MOOC) 등을 그 예로 들 수 있다. 또한 구글, AT&T, Bank of America 등으로부터 지원을 받는 Khan Academy(칸아카데미)는 3배 이상 급증한 학생 수요를 맞추기 위해 서버 용량을 배로 확장하기도 하였다. 여름방학 동안 학원 특강 수업에만 전념하는 대신, 미국 및 Top 아시아권 유학을 준비하는 뛰어난 학생이라면 MOOC 프로그램 등을 통해 학력과 프로파일을 쌓아가며 자신만의 스토리를 만들어 나가도록 하자.
온라인 인턴십/ 프로젝트 기회 활용
전 세계 수많은 단체들이 원격으로 인맥을 맺고 온라인으로 활동 가능한 청소년들을 선발하고 있는 점을 활용할 수 있다. 예를 들어 노숙자 해결을 위해 스탠퍼드대의 전략적 주거실험을 사업화하는 캘리포니아 기관의 이메일 마케팅 팀에 참여하거나, 직업교육을 통해 소득 격차를 줄이는 글로벌 교육사업에 참여해 교육과정 자료를 만드는 기회도 찾을 수 있다. 청소년들의 참여가 증가하며 기하급수적인 성장을 경험한 시카고를 기반으로 한 지역사회 정화 프로젝트의 지역 지부에 협력하는 것도 이번 여름에 실행 가능한 인턴십 기회 중 하나이다. 이렇듯 전공을 탐색하고 지역, 분야, 구성원에 대해 배우며 영향력을 펼칠 수 있는 기회가 그 어느 때보다 많아진 셈이다. 거리, 시간, 연령 등 조건의 문턱이 낮아진 기회를 적극 활용하도록 하자. 세상을 치열하게 탐구할 수 있는 고등학교 학창시절 학생이라는 신분이 오히려 변화를 이끌어내는 원동력이 될 것이고, 학교라는 커뮤니티에서 보다 확장시켜 전 세계를 향해서 나만의 네트워크를 넓혀가며 협력하고 영향력을 발휘해 리더십을 보이는 것에 집중해야 한다.
미국, 영국, 싱가포르, 홍콩, 한국 등 목표대학과 관심분야, 전공을 탐색하고, 자신의 목표에 부합하는 숨은 기회를 찾아야 한다. 여름방학 기간 동안 다양한 기회를 통해 스스로를 차별화하고 자신만의 Personal Story를 작성하기 위한 요소를 모으는데 힘써야 한다. COVID-19로 인해 공인인증시험이 Optional로 정책 전환됨에도 불구하고, 사람과 사람이 대면할 수 없는 이 현실 앞에서 Extracurricular Activities를 Optional로 전환한 대학은 어느 한 곳도 없으며 CollegeBoard는 계속해서 활동의 중요성에 대한 기사를 쏟아내고 있다. 2020년은 그 어느 때보다 기회가 많은 여름방학임을 기억하고 현명하게 사용하도록 하자.

The result can be surprising to many parents and students, since it seems counterintuitive that Collegeboard, the organization that hosts the SAT, would produce so much research papers, articles, presentations, and college admission officer interviews on the importance of extracurricular activities in Ivy League and top US college admissions. Unfortunately though, many Korean parents continue to assume that the SAT is incomparable in importance versus extracurricular activities, and disregard the fact that extracurricular activities – whether it be volunteering, internships, or school organizations – is an extremely time sensitive factor in college admissions. College admissions officers do not care whether an applicant produces SAT scores years before or just in time for the application deadline, and in the world of COVID-19, SAT scores have become optional at most major American colleges. Extracurricular activities, however, are viewed in respect to dedication over time and especially as the world continues to wrestle with a global pandemic, admission officers are more intent on finding applicants who have positively impacted the world and their communities.
Summer was always the opportune time for exploring, expanding and deepening extracurricular engagements. Traditionally, many highly aspiring students who aim for admission into the Ivy League and top US colleges attend summer programs, or participate in internships and volunteering works during the summer. However, most summer programs have been cancelled due to COVID-19, and the summer of 2020 is fast becoming an extension of the spring that has become synonymous to life having come to a grinding halt for students with closures that affected schools, competitions, group events and even hagwons.
However, countless opportunities have also been generated as a result of COVID-19, for students who decide to bring themselves online. In fact, there was never a more opportune time to take classes online, including summer university courses that have been expanded to take on more high school students online. Many great online programs, such as eCornell to name just one, have rolling and open enrollment, while MOOC (massive open online courseware) such as Coursera and EdX, and even Khan Academy, which has received grants from Google, AT&T and Bank of America, have expanded their server capacities to take on more students. This means only one thing. While many Korean students find themselves just taking summer classes at hagwon, at least a handful of their highly aspiring peers are building up their academic resumes through MOOC programs that provide learning certificates. Due to COVID-19, the practice of taking classes online has become a new norm, and for those who aim for admissions into America’s top colleges, continuing to use the internet as a resource for learning throughout the summer is becoming a new hallmark.
Besides from MOOC, many volunteering and internship opportunities have gone online, and many organizations around the world, from community assistance centers to international NGOs, that have been affected financially and in man-power by COVID-19 are hiring teenagers who can contribute remotely. So now is as high-time as any to learn about, network with and even impact the industry, career, part of the world, or the population of people you want to help. At no other point in history has geography and even age become less of a limiter than now. Also considering how every part of the world and all parts of life have been impacted by COVID-19, there is much change a young person can impact. After all, at no other point in life than in your school years – whether high school or college – can you have access to a network of peers who can so wholeheartedly explore and challenge the world together so ferociously.
If you are a high school student or the parent of a student with high hopes for admissions into a top university, wherever your dream college is in the US, UK, Singapore, Hong Kong or Korea, you must define your interest, find the opportunities that are out there, and spend the summer in productive and provable development that can build up your personal story that can become the foundation to your differentiator. After all, even while admissions tests such as the SAT and ACT have become optional due to COVID-19, a decision that the College Board actually encouraged to colleges, College Board continues to write about the importance of extracurricular activities and no college has made extracurricular activities optional. So you must use the summer wisely lest year 2020 in its entirety become a gaping hole that just cannot be filled because the clock cannot be turned backwards.
