Alex Min

TOEFL

GED + Ivy League & Top College Admissions

Currently, American colleges recognize three paths to receiving a high school diploma. The most popular path is to receive a traditional diploma from an American high school, but as the number of homeschoolers continues to rise from 4% to 8% every year, online high school diplomas are now starting to receive as much recognition as traditional high school diplomas by American colleges. In fact, universities such as Stanford, Duke, and Johns Hopkins have explicitly disclosed that they cherish the different intellectual energy that homeschoolers bring to their campuses, as detailed in my last article. For Korean students studying to receive their high school diplomas through online American high schools, they must make sure to reference check the official recognition of the accrediting organization of their respective schools.

Even as the popularity of online American high school diplomas is on the rise, many others are choosing to receive a high school certificate through testing instead. By far the most popular high school equivalent certificate is the GED, but as the number of GED takers is also on the rise, the HiSET and TASC have joined the ecosystem as GED alternatives for American students. Which high school graduation exam a student should take depends on each student’s academic circumstances, goals, and background.

Three major questions arise for parents of Korean students whose children are preparing for the American GED. First, do these exams carry enough recognition by top American colleges? How do colleges read the scores received on the GED for example, and what subjects are covered? Is there anything that one can do to strengthen the academic profile to become more competitive? These are all valid questions that must be addressed.

Colleges that Accept the GED

Currently, almost 100% of American colleges accept the GED, with an increasing number of colleges also beginning to accept the HiSET and TASC. In fact, Ivy League colleges such as Columbia are known to reserve a portion of each freshman class they accept for GED, HiSET, and TASC applicants for the same reason top American colleges claim an increasing appreciation for homeschoolers: intellectual diversity that comes from different academic and life experiences.

Colleges with the strongest interest in GED applicants, however, are large states university systems, such as the University of California (UC), University of Michigan (U-M), Penn State University, and the State University of New York (SUNY).

GED to GPA Conversion

Colleges normalize the student’s GPA by converting grade point averages to a 4.0 scale by using an officialized ratio conversion. An IB student with a 7 for example is seen as equivalent to a 4.0 for example. Likewise, the GED has a conversion table that sets the perfect score “band” of 200 to 175, which is received by the Top 8% of GED test-takers, as equal to 4.0, 174-173 as A-, 172-171 as B+, and so on.

Macroscopically, American colleges consider 200 to 175 to be in the highest band, GED College Ready + Credit, which means some colleges would even give students who receive GED scores in this range college credit like they would for AP scores. The second band between 174 to 165 is GED College Ready, which gives many American colleges enough confidence to waive placement testing. This shows the confidence that American colleges place on GED applicants, especially compared to how many students admitted from American and British curriculum-based high schools in Korea are required by American colleges to take placement exams. A GED score ranging from 145 to 164 is considered a GED Passing Score, which provides the score to apply to an average American state college.

GED and TOEFL for American Universities

Korean applicants tend to assume that there must be a positive correlation between TOEFL scores and college rankings. Surprisingly, the average TOEFL score of applicants who were admitted into Ivy League universities was 100, which was the same for NYU, University of Michigan, and University of Southern California. George Washington University in Washington DC, which is a popular university among American students especially for business and political science but lesser known to Koreans, has an average TOEFL score of 90, while Boston University posts a TOEFL score range between 90 to 100. Meanwhile, UC Berkeley has a TOEFL average of 80 compared to UCLA’s average of 100. In fact, UIUC recorded one of America’s highest TOEFL average, with a range of 102 to 110 for admitted applicants.

Comparing the average TOEFL scores of students accepted into American colleges show that while American colleges do consider TOEFL as proof of a student having the English proficiency to do well in college, they do not consider TOEFL scores to be a decisive factor in admission. The focus is on high school grades or GED scores, and the applicant’s profile instead.

Profile Must Display “Why”

To get accepted into an average American state college, a GED may be enough academically and regular life experiences can also be sufficient. However, top American colleges consider the unique profile of each student as portrayed in the college application, so having strong activities and experiences is a must, just as is the case for homeschoolers with a high school diploma from an online American school. After all, students who are not enrolled in traditional brick-and-mortar high schools must submit an additional essay explaining their academic history. If used effectively, this additional essay can provide a dramatic boost to a homeschooler or GED applicant versus traditional applicants.

Considering an alternative education path can either be unnerving or an exciting opportunity that can lead to rich success. The factor to consider is, American colleges – whether the Ivy League or state universities – are open to students of different experiences, so a homeschooler or GED applicant can apply to top American colleges with as much confidence as their traditional peers. For traditional students, the point to remember here is that yes, grades and SAT scores do matter but as the admissions policies of top American colleges show, having a rich profile of activities and experiences is oftentimes the dealmaker.

Alex Min

Ivy League and the Homeschooling Trend

In December 2000, Stanford University made headlines when it published “In a Class by Themselves,” an article that revealed how Stanford, Harvard, and Yale consider homeschooled applicants as an important source of intellectual vitality at elite schools. Stanford further elaborated that they flag homeschoolers with a special code and found emerging trends that support how homeschoolers “bring a mix of unusual experiences, special motivations and intellectual independence”. At the time of the article, there were 1.3 million homeschoolers in grades K-12 or 1 in 33. 15 years later, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, the number of homeschoolers had risen to 2.2 million. Today, a quick Google search reveals numerous online communities of mostly wealthy White American parents who choose homeschooling over even private and boarding schools because of the unique learning experiences that homeschooling can open up, while membership-only pages share experiences and insight into how they can differentiate their children for admission into the Ivy League.

Then, something shifted. What used to be an elective alternate educational route became normalcy as students around the world, especially in the United States, began remotely schooling from home when school buildings were shuttered due to COVID-19. While most parents, who had become frustrated and even angered after wrestling with their homebound children, eagerly await the end of remote schooling with the new school year fast approaching, an astounding 1 in 12 American students are choosing to study from home, a 300% growth versus mid-2019. The numbers are even more alarming for Black, Latino, and Asian families. Black students choosing to homeschool rather than returning to school in September jumped from 1% to 8% of Black students – a more than sixfold increase – while Hispanic students recorded a rise from 2% to 8%. Homeschooling White families also doubled, from 4% to 8%. Asian American families recorded the second-highest homeschooling growth rate after Blacks, rising five times from 1% to 5%.

Underlying the dramatic increase in homeschooling among families of color are concerns over yawning achievement gaps marked by stubborn inequality in the quality of education provided by schools in poorer neighborhoods where the majority of America’s minorities live. Adding to this mix is the rising number of families that are choosing to homeschool after experiencing how a flexible schedule and the freedom to choose interesting and challenging courses can be educationally liberating and empowering. Choosing to directly confront racism in the United States by influencing their children by including cultural education, Asian families in larger cities are especially choosing to homeschool. In New York City and Chicago, 2 in every 3 Asian American children are choosing remote schooling in the upcoming school year.

According to Business Insider, a news magazine targeting working professionals, “schools such as MIT, Harvard, Stanford, and Duke all actively recruit homeschoolers” because the added freedom of time that comes with homeschooling allows for a more creative mixture of learning experiences and participation in their communities. Also noteworthy is that the Ivy League and other top American universities are recognizing that homeschoolers, even after controlling for parental income level and amount of education, consistently perform better academically than almost 90% of their school-educated peers.

The main lessons that parents can take from this development are:

Homeschooling is neither a strange or dangerous option, even for students who are serious about gaining admission into the Ivy League and top American colleges. Korean parents must rid their psyche of the cultural stigma against homeschooling.

Social trends matter to top American colleges, especially when they impact Blacks and Latinos for issues involving inequality and when an event is considered as an opportunity for empowering America’s lesser privileged. Just as American colleges had forced SAT Subjects out while going SAT optional after acknowledging how COVID-19 disproportionately affected Black and Latino students, homeschooling will increasingly be considered not only more openly but also statistically significant.

If not homeschooling, the lesson to take here is the realization of just how much weight is placed on intellectual independence, creative learning experiences, and community participation. Doing more of the same thing as others, or even doing the same thing better than others, is not the focus of top American universities. Instead, you must strive to show how you can think differently, interact with the community across multiple planes, and develop new learning opportunities that set you apart from others.

Dishonor Societies vs Honor Societies 구별법

Apex Ivy 대표 Alex Min

(Honor Societies)

Dishonor Societies 구별법

Dishonor Societies vs Honor Societies

Trying to differentiate oneself for admissions into a top American college such as the Ivy League is an ordeal suffered by many as students and parents weigh themselves against the competition. Everyone already knows that high GPA and SAT scores are not enough to win in US admissions, so the competition eventually falls on differentiating oneself through extracurricular activities and achievements. Unfortunately, herein enters the wolves that hungrily lay down the traps with attractive-looking baits for worried students and parents to be caught by.

In my last article, I served a reminder of the importance of honesty in US college admissions, and how wrong decisions can lead to even criminal charges in the United States, by referring to the Varsity Blues Scandal. This week, I will reveal some of the most common tricks that malicious organizations and consultants trap parents with, which can lead to devastating results for their children.

Honor Societies

The oldest trick in the book is what US news organizations have coined, Dishonor Societies. These honor societies are often named very similar to the reputable honor societies that US colleges openly appreciate, and as admissions into top US colleges become tougher, an increasing number of misinformed parents are mistakenly encouraging their children to join these. Writing these into the extracurricular or awards section in the college application can actually be damaging to the applicant, however, since colleges begin red-flagging applicants with less than credible specs.

There is an increasing number of these bad honor societies, which are designed to take money from parents even at the expense of a child’s future, but the most famous among them is NSHSS, or National Society of High School Scholars. NSHSS was brought to attention in the US media after failing a 12-point honor society checking system. Plainly, US college admission officers have warned students and parents to beware of NSHSS and similar programs with Stanford releasing a news article that called these programs ‘predatory frauds’ but thousands of students are still victimized every year in the US alone.

Unfortunately, similar Ponzi schemes are already entrenched in Korea, with names that sound honorable but with the moniker “Korea” attached to the front. These programs expect that American colleges won’t become aware of their less-than-honorable reputation by relying on a scarcity of information available in English, despite being predominantly active with English-speaking international school and boarding school students. After meeting countless parents that I have met who asked me about these sort of honor societies, I can honestly claim that far too many Korean parents had fallen victim to these dishonorable societies, just like the students and parents who were taken advantage of in the United States. If it were to amount to just some lost money, it would be possible to count the losses and move on with life. However, the possibility of raising red flags and even being completely rejected due to incredulous information causes an urgent need to know about at least some of the major call signs.

3 Major Checks

1. Scarce or conflicting website information

As introduced above, a reputable honor society will offer clear and abundant information about itself and the works of its members. After all, a proud honor society would be pleased to provide information transparency. Honor societies are supposed to be managed by highly-educated persons, so the writing on the website should be clear and professional, without confusing remarks. Some honor societies have websites with such poorly written content, and if a parent or student can pick up on the errors, discrepancies, or lack of clarity, admissions officers also can.

2. Lack of reputable affiliations

Reputation is everything to honor societies, so a lack of reputable affiliations is a clear sign that something is very amiss. However, fraudulent honor societies survive on misdirection by listing well-known competitions, events, and resources on their websites without providing any clear indication of affiliation to any of these. A fake honor society I saw during verification after being requested by a parent turned out to be a hagwon that was trying to repackage itself as an honor society by publishing ghost-written research papers and articles on social topics for students without having any sort of reputable expert review process.

3. Sliding induction rules

Honor societies live on the merits of members, so giving exceptions is an avoided practice. However, fraudulent honor societies are run by owners who have hearts that are human enough to be melted with money. Real honor societies do not conduct the induction process by making and bending rules during the review, because the metrics for acceptance, including exceptions, are clearly outlined and rather inflexible.

Unfortunately, fraudulent scholarships and competitions also darken US college admissions but I lack the space to cover these in this article.

Remember that it takes but one phone call or email for colleges to begin an investigation that can result in getting a rejection or even worse dismissal from college so beware of “predatory frauds’ and safeguard your child’s future by building him up with truths. The more you have, the more you can lose. The less you have, the better the foundation should be.

Alex Min

Varsity Blues

<영문버전>

Two years have passed since the Varsity Blues college admissions scandal that involved dozens of wealthy parents, including Hollywood stars, and athletic coaches at universities such as Stanford, Yale, and UCLA among others. Overseen by the US Department of Justice, fraud investigations were conducted by the FBI and 44 of those indicted were given prison sentences while 13 are still awaiting trial. Since the Varsity Blues Scandal in the United States, South Korea also wrestled with college admission scandals that shook the country even as the media publically crucified those accused of misconduct.

However, dishonest college admissions services are once again feeding on the minds of anxious parents who, staring at the plummetting acceptance rates at America’s Ivy League and top universities, feel compelled to help their children gain an extra edge in whatever way they can. These so-called services take on many fraudulent forms, from ghostwriting research papers and writing competition essays to membership in fake honor societies, whose telltale is the lack of involvement from any legitimate organization besides itself, to fake volunteering records that are either bought or obtained through personal relationships. Meanwhile, the Department of Justice maintains an open email allowing anyone with fraud allegations to file anonymous reports.

In the United States, falsifying information in the college application is a criminal offense that is heavy enough to carry a prison sentence. Another devastating and increasingly common consequence of being found for falsifying information in the college application is the cancellation of the acceptance letter. What parents must remember is that American universities have reacted to the Varsity Blues Scandal with tougher verification checks of the information provided by the applicant in the college application. These checks are mostly conducted during the application review, but admission offices are also starting to perform them on current students, which has led to expulsions. Even graduates are falling under renewed scrutiny, and being found for false information can lead to the cancellation of degrees.

What parents and students must understand is that the greater the impact an information has on the outcome of an applicant, the more likely the chance of an audit, which according to Yale, “involves proactive communication with school teachers and counselors, searches of publicly available information such as websites and social media, and requests for additional verifying records and references.” Yale further elaborated, “audited information includes, but is not limited to, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities, awards and distinctions, and academic records.”

The US public’s outrage at the Varsity Blues Scandal led the country to a soul searching on the country’s fundamental dedication to fairness. In response, the media has pressured US universities by scrutinizing for developments in their dedication to fact-checking and US universities are consequently responding with tougher, more proactive processes in fact-checking information.

Some direct quotations from admission officers on the key developments being taken up by top universities that students and parents must be aware of are:

– University of California: Since implementing tougher fact-checking, at least 100 applications have been canceled every year due to students failing to respond to requests to verify claimed achievements. Claims for a special talent in sports and art now fall under stricter scrutiny, and a systemwide review randomly verifying information, even including content in personal essays, is in implementation.

– University of Pennsylvania: By concentration on verifying participation in extracurriculars, this Ivy League is trying to close any loopholes that can tempt students to report falsified information. Applicants are selected for further vetting randomly but also for inconsistencies found after reviewing the application and records including teacher and counselor recommendations.

– Northwestern University: Committed to maintaining a zero-tolerance policy, submitting false information can result in a revocation of admission, or, if enrolled, the student can be expelled.

– Dartmouth University: Vigilant to the potential for fraud, the review process is rigorous, multifaceted, and thorough. Dartmouth is committed to the energetic response to, and investigation of, any allegations of misconduct.

The lesson here should be that admission heads and officers at almost every top 20 universities have publically announced their dedication to fighting fraud with the same stern voice they used while they staked out their commitment to decreasing their reliance on admissions testing, which led to this year’s closure of SAT Subjects. Knowing this, in the world of increasingly tougher college admissions, shortcuts can seem attractive, but the consequences are becoming too heavy for both the parent and especially the student to bear. Therefore, the clear path to acceptance into top American universities, and to safeguard against any possibility of unfortunate outcomes such as expulsions and degree cancellations, is to truly develop the student to become passionately and genuinely involved in exploring and building their interests so they can become admitted based on truth.

<영문 버전>

There was a time when creating a college list for rising seniors and their parents had a simple beginning. Using the GPA and SAT scores as references, one would open up US News, start from the top and go straight down, jotting down the college names that spark interest to create the initial college list. Comparing this initial list with their own school’s statistics, which may be Naviance or an equivalent college application management platform such as CIAFLO, MaiaLearning, or Bridge U to name just some of the most common ones, students would study the GPA – SAT scattergram to determine which colleges they should keep, add, or delete from their initial college list.

However, with the reduced weight of the SAT in US college admissions due to the SAT optional policy, whether a student is considering the most competitive Ivy League or a state university, the GPA – SAT scattergram has become significantly less effective at predicting acceptance possibility. Moreover, for students who are interested in applying to UC colleges, whether Berkeley and LA or Riverside and Merced, the State of California’s court decision to make it illegal to consider SAT as any influence in college admission raises more confusion.

To build the most effective college list, students and parents should decrease their reliance on academic numbers, and also refrain from blindly following the most popular college ranking system such as US News. Also, while traditional lists such as Ivy League, Ivy Peer, New Ivy, and B-Ivies can be considered for historic prestige value, students and parents should begin their college search by considering what their values and goals are, and begin their journey of creating the initial college list by looking deeply into various college ranking systems by first understanding the main factors that are considered by different college ranking systems. To assist with this journey, two of the most popular college ranking systems will be studied in this article.

US News Best Colleges and Universities

Outcomes (40%): Student debt, graduation rates, and social mobility.
While graduation rate is very important for every student, US News places an extreme amount of emphasis on giving higher rankings to colleges that lower student debt by providing more financial aid, and also gives a significant advantage to colleges that admit more students who receive federal financial aid such as the Pell Grant.

Faculty Resources (20%): Receiving half the weight of Outcomes, this criteria includes class size, student to faculty ratio, average faculty salary, and proportion of full time faculty. Focused only on faculty data with no consideration for student experience, US News provides ranking advantages to colleges with happier faculty rather than happier students.

Expert Opinion (20%): Unofficially called the peer evaluation, opinions of colleagues from other colleges, such as college presidents and admissions deans also comprise a large portion of the ranking algorithm. Unfortunately for most students, what college faculty from other colleges think of their college is much less important than what employers and industry leaders think of their college.

Student Excellence (7%): The meager 7% allotted to SAT/ACT scores and high school class rank for accepted students makes US News college rankings a difficult resource to rely on in predicting admission results.

Being the most popular American college ranking system, US News has received so much political backlash that its ranking system has become biased toward measuring for politically correct factors rather than student outcomes such as learning experience, employment, or graduate school admission rate.

Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College Rankings

Outcomes (40%): Most weight is placed on the variables that directly consider student success, such as graduation rate, salary after graduation, student debt after graduation, and academic reputation.

Resources (30%): How much money is spent by the university per student, student to faculty ratio, research papers written per faculty are considered.

Engagement (20%): By directly surveying student opinions, student learning experiences, likelihood of recommending their college to others, and quality of interaction with faculty directly inspects what experiences a student may have by attending the college.

Environment (10%): Student diversity, proportion of international students, cultural minorities, and faculty diversity are used to determine what the learning environment may be like.

With Resources, Engagement, and Environment taking up 60% of the ranking algorithm, this college ranking system excels at capturing student experiences while at college. With 40% of the weight distributed to student focused outcomes such as graduation and employment, Wall Street Journal does a significantly better job at providing a good overview of the factors that most Korean students and parents will care more about than the variables that are considered in US News college rankings.

While college rankings can provide a good launchpad for creating the initial college list, students must branch into studying details such as the majors that are available, what the major’s required classes and resources are like, career building opportunities such as internships and local industry, undergraduate research programs, and extracurricular opportunities such as student organizations. Knowing these details are necessary not only to write stellar essays and to do well at the college interview, but also to find the college that most closely aligns with a student’s personal vision of success in and the life beyond college.

(Extracurricular Activities)

Alex Min

With the vacuum left by the SAT becoming optional and SAT Subjects getting shut down, students and parents interested in US college admissions are enlisting into a sort of academic arms race to fill the academic void with other achievements. Some efforts are well placed but insufficient alone; concentrating on raising school grades and course rigor are great places to start, but considering that competitive applicants to top US colleges such as the Ivy League and its peers share a similar set of high grades and challenging courses, the focus naturally falls on trying to differentiate through extracurricular achievements. In theory, this focus on areas beyond school academics is fundamentally correct, but many students and parents expend their time and energy on pursuing what they incorrectly assume are considered the most important by admission officers.

Almost everyone presumes that leadership is extremely important to getting admitted to top US colleges. After all, the Common App provides 10 slots for listing activities, and each slot provides an area for describing leadership and position. So students compete for leadership positions in school clubs. Community service hours are also stacked up like bricks to towering heights, since showing more concern for the world and improving the world more than other applicants must provide a competitive advantage. After all, the college application also has space for inputting information on the amount of time committed to the activities that a student has pursued throughout high school. To fill the ‘Awards and Honors’ slots on the college application, training to win in competitions, from the AMC and USACO to debate, speech, and writing becomes part of daily high school life.

Top US colleges, however, consider applications on levels beyond nominal data by deeply analyzing information. Stanford University’s AAALab, which collaborates closely with Stanford Admissions, researches to develop innovative approaches to using game-based, adaptive learning assessments based on the positive correlation between productivity and collaboration. So, working to build an extracurricular profile that maximizes collaboration and teamwork, not competitive tendencies, provides a direct response to the sort of leadership qualities sought after by admission officers. In “Two Cheers for Higher Education,” a book published by Princeton University Press, the importance of real world problem solving was also stressed, which is by many intellectual degrees beyond beyond the nominal list of achievements that most applicants list on their applications. Meanwhile, Harvard Education Press’ book, “On My Own” pointed out the importance of forming deep and meaningful partnerships with high school teachers in identifying and developing student talent, especially in STEM fields.

Strategy 1

By perusing the student’s application for higher-level critical thinking and analytic skills, admission officers look to understand how an applicant was able to develop solutions to problems discovered during personal and academic journeys. So a successful college application questions the world through a different rather than conventional lens, and sheds light on the sort of strategic thinking and group effort that a student was able to muster, sustain, and manage in the pursuit of a real world solution rather than focusing on a list of achievements.

Strategy 2

While the student’s application and essays comprise the main deck of document that college admission officers assess, the above qualities must also be reflected in the student’s teacher and counselor recommendations, which must display how a student had developed the academic opportunities and achievements with personality traits that brought learning to life.

Therefore, communicating deeply and regularly with teachers who will be your recommendation writers is one of the most important tasks that students aiming for admission into top colleges must take up.

<영문 버전>

The impact of COVID-19 on universities across the world, from the United States to Korea, resulted not only in the replacement of live classes with remote learning but also the implementation of campus-wide shutdowns that disrupted research in incalculable ways. In February 2021, roughly a year into the pandemic, University of Chicago’s survey of America’s 191 largest doctoral institutions reported that the impact of how the pandemic had changed teaching, work-life balance, racism, and career trajectories has yet to be understood, but one fact was very quantifiable. 67% of science, technology, engineering and math research acrosss the world’s strongest citadels of research had been delayed or discontinued due to the pandemic.

As society came to a grinding halt, high schools were no exceptions and soon schools everywhere had made a frenzied transition to operate remote learning. Meanwhile, normalcy disappeared for students preparing for US college admissions, as everything from SAT and ACT cancellations to the closure of all forms of extracurricular activities, from school clubs to sports, volunteering, internships, and competitions amputated college prep plans. Trying to fill in the growing list of blank spaces, many Korean students preparing to apply to American colleges were led by their parents to an ironic output that seemed to bend reality. More Korean students had somehow managed to prepare and submit research papers with their college applications than ever before. This quizzical, if not illogical, outcome was the result of hagwons marketing research writing assistance services to parents.

For anyone living anywhere with social distancing pandemic measures, and for those who are or are colleagues of research professionals, the immutable fact is that just as University of Chicago had found, increased research activity during COVID-19, beyond virology and pharmaceuticals of course, is an impossibility. After all, the forced move to somehow continue research work remotely, physically shut out from laboratories if not the campus itself, created unforseeable challenges at previously unimaginable scales that even the best research institutions mostly found themselves mostly working with old lab data, such as Stanford where Phase 2 university pandemic measures still allow only essential personnel into laboratories as each person must maintain a two meter distance from everyone else.

Factoring in the confusing college admission results for far too many Korean students, and considering the requests posted by readers of my last column, the imperative is the need for very clearcut yet logical perspectives on what American universities actually expect from their applicants.

Perspective 1.

Global emergency means more opportunities for impact.

Making an impact in the world during a global pandemic is like trying to fight a forest fire. The flames are everywhere. Did you participate in helping to resolve the mask shortage problem, or assist with education challenges due to the pandemic? From social distancing measures causing an exponential surge of depressions among the isolated populations, such as the elderly, to those suffering economically as unemployment skyrocketed, COVID-19’s flames are everywhere.

Solution 1.

Just as schools, universities, and companies implemented remote work, so did nonprofits and NGOs, including the world’s most prominent organizations. From translation work to document creation to social media campaigning and communication to data research, volunteering opportunities are more abundant now than ever before, and more accessible with less restrictions to geography and age. Colleges will realistically expect applicants to have taken up these opportunities, not only for the sake of building personal experiences but because not contributing to society during this critical time is the very marker of the student colleges would want to avoid from accepting.

Perspective 2.

COVID-19 made technology adoption faster and more wide-spread, across all sectors of all industries. Meanwhile, due to precipitous drops in travel, air pollution reached all-time lows throughout travel-heavy regions of the world. Supply constraints and factory closures in developing countries challenged decades-old offshore manufacturing, while shipping logistics and localized manufacturing became government endorsed initiatives. The world has changed, and many of these changes are here to stay.

Solution 2.

Focus on rising industries and sectors, and identify opportunities for internships in companies that are aptly building for the post COVID-19 world. Concentrate on startups making an impact, or ventures launched by reputable companies and organizations that are future facing rather than old giants. Colleges know that every historically significant era created changes to ripple throughout the economy, and taking up opportunities to explore and learn new areas is a hallmark of every successful person, so show yourself preparing for success.

Responsiveness is not only adaptability but also a responsibility. Think simply, and it is possible to see that this is in fact the critical and common composition of all students who are of the right fabric for success. So rather than trying to be better and different from everyone else, try to find and fulfill roles in the changed supply-demand schematics of a post COVID-19 world, which will inevitably come, for success in college admissions and beyond.

Alex Min

This admissions year will forever be remembered as a year of infamy, with all 8 Ivy League colleges posting unprecedented record-low acceptance rates. Columbia nearly halved, from last year’s 6.15% to this year’s 3.66% while Cornell fell below 10% first the first time with 8.52%. Yale also dipped below 5% with this year’s 4.62%, while Harvard posted 3.43%. Hidden behind these numbers is the surprising fact that 7 out of 8 Ivy League colleges admitted about 100 to 200 fewer students this year than last year.

Beyond the Ivy League, NYU posted 12.8% acceptance rate this year compared to last year’s 15%, while Boston College’s 18.9% dwarfed last year’s 24% and Northwestern University also fell from last year’s 9.3% to 6.8%.

These alarming drops to admission rates come as a result of application counts rising from 20% to even 30% at the Ivy League and top American colleges; Harvard and MIT deserve specific mentions, as their application counts rose by 43% and 66% respectively.

Some of the factors that weighed into the sharp increase of application counts, which then led to the dramatic falls in acceptance rates, is a residual effect from last year, when many students who chose to defer college as education went online applied again this year. However, considering that college application counts also rose sharply in the years following the Great Recession of 2012 when low job employment rates caused more students to apply for the more competitive colleges, the current high unemployment job market is likely to encourage high application counts into top colleges over the next few years. More than any other factor though is the dropping of the SAT as a requirement to admission due to Corona19, and since many top colleges have already reported that the SAT will continue to remain optional next year even as SAT Subjects have now disappeared, the high application counts are likely to continue, if not rise more next year.

With SAT becoming optional, only 46% of students applying through Commonapp submitted SAT scores, and this has encouraged more students of more backgrounds to apply and get accepted to top colleges. This year, Harvard increased Black and Latinx students from 27.5% to 31.3%, while Cornell and USC admitted record-highs of respectively 37% and 20% more first-generation college students.

With the SAT becoming optional and SAT Subject tests disintegrated, parents are focusing on GPA and AP/IB. These academic factors will continue to play a role in admissions, but since students apply to colleges based on their academic performance anyway, nearly all students applying to top colleges are similarly achieved academically. Meanwhile, while Korean students and parents are going nuts over AP, many top US private schools have gotten rid of the AP through consorted effort in Independent Curriculum Group (ICG), whose primary initiative is to get rid of the AP, even as some of America’s top high schools continue to post high Ivy League admission results after dropping the AP more than 10 years ago.

Foremost, parents must look at what benefits these schools are claiming for in dropping the AP and apply these benefits to their own children’s application profiles. The primary argument given by these schools is, the AP curriculum is too rigid, which limits student creativity while also making it impossible for teachers to flexibly adapt the curriculum to fit today’s fast-paced changes, even as students compete for AP course count rather than developing their individual intellectual paths. These changes come as an increasing number of top colleges in America, notably among the Liberal Arts, are beginning to not grant course credit based on AP exam scores as their research proved the inefficacy of the AP in preparing students for their college’s course rigor.

Strategy 1: “Individualized intellectual path”

Rather than compete for more numbers such as more AP courses and exams to make up for lesser focus on SAT, work on stitching together a personal academic curriculum that includes school courses as well as coursework beyond school through recognized course providers.

Strategy 2: “Collaborative and circumstantial creativity, not competition”

Absence the SAT filter, Ivy League and top colleges concentrated more on understanding how applicants impacted their communities rather than competitions and awards. Less weight was given to applicants who had personal achievements compared to those who showed their creative ability to care for the world around them during a time of this historic pandemic, which makes perfect sense.

This year, many high-achieving Korean applicants, whether in American boarding schools or Korean international schools, were rejected by Ivy League and top American colleges while those who were seemingly less achieved academically were admitted. The point to remember is that Corona19 has changed our world permanently, and US college admission has changed accordingly so your college prep strategy and direction need to be fittingly altered.
